In a move aimed at supporting peace initiatives, the M23 rebel group has declared its intention to withdraw forces from Walikale, a town recently seized during their offensive in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The decision, made by the Congo River Alliance, aligns with a ceasefire established in February, according to a statement released on Saturday.
The announcement is seen as a gesture towards mitigating ongoing conflicts, as the Congolese government cautiously welcomed the news. Officials hope that the withdrawal will lead to tangible progress, particularly after M23 unexpectedly canceled a planned dialogue with government representatives in Angola, which was to be their first formal meeting since President Felix Tshisekedi softened his stance on direct communication with the rebels.
A senior alliance member stated that the repositioning of troops is intended to "give peace a chance," although specifics regarding the new locations of the M23 forces were not disclosed. The alliance is urging that Walikale and the surrounding areas remain demilitarized to prevent any resurgence of hostilities.
Foreign Affairs Minister Therese Kayikwamba Wagner emphasized the need for M23 to demonstrate commitment to dialogue and peace through concrete actions, stating, "We will see whether M23 will withdraw from Walikale and whether M23 will give priority to dialogue and peace."
The capture of Walikale is noteworthy, as it extends the rebels' reach and brings them dangerously close to Kisangani, DRC's fourth-largest city–an area critical to trade and transportation along the Congo River. As the situation develops, the international community watches closely, hopeful for a path toward lasting peace in the region.
