In a strong rebuttal, the Trump administration has firmly dismissed a recent call from French politician Raphaël Glucksmann to return the Statue of Liberty to France. During a press briefing on Monday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded emphatically, stating, “Absolutely not.” She advised Glucksmann to consider the historical significance of American assistance to France, saying, “It’s only because of the United States of America that the French are not speaking German right now,” alluding to the vital American support in World War II.
Glucksmann, a member of the European Parliament, made headlines the day prior at a party convention, where he argued that the current U.S. government has strayed from the values symbolized by Lady Liberty. He urged Americans who he claims side with oppressive forces to reconsider their stance: “Give us back the Statue of Liberty,” he declared, referencing significant cuts to scientists and public health leaders under the Trump administration.
The French politician suggested that if the U.S. does not restore funding and positions within its research sector, France would be willing to absorb those responsibilities. However, questions remain about how France could implement such a move, as the iconic statue remains U.S. government property and any attempt to reclaim it could jeopardize the delicate diplomatic relations that French President Emmanuel Macron is seeking to strengthen, particularly amidst ongoing negotiations to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
