Myanmar is facing an overwhelming humanitarian crisis following a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that has claimed over 1,600 lives, according to Red Cross officials. The situation deteriorates by the hour as the Southeast Asian nation grapples with the aftermath.
The quake, one of Myanmar's most powerful in a century, struck on Friday and wreaked havoc on critical infrastructure, including bridges, highways, airports, and railways. These damages have severely hampered rescue operations, further complicated by an ongoing civil war.
"This is not just a disaster; it is a complex humanitarian crisis layered over existing vulnerabilities," emphasized Alexander Matheou, regional director for Asia Pacific at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, in a statement. He described the disaster's magnitude as substantial, underscoring the urgent need for support.
On Sunday, foreign rescue teams arrived to assist Myanmar in managing this crisis. Simultaneously, local Red Cross volunteers have been tirelessly providing first aid and distributing essentials such as blankets, tarpaulins, and hygiene kits amidst the extensive destruction.
Addressing the mounting need for relief, the IFRC has launched an emergency appeal for 100 million CHF ($113.60 million). The funds aim to provide life-saving relief and early recovery support for 100,000 people affected by the disaster.
Efforts by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs are ongoing, although hindered by main and minor road damages, making it challenging for hospitals in central and northwestern Myanmar to cope with the influx of injured individuals.
