In a devastating turn of events, a powerful earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, resulting in a staggering death toll that has now reached 1,002, as reported by the military government on Saturday. This shocking figure marks a significant increase from earlier state media reports that had estimated just 144 fatalities.
The quake, which hit around lunchtime, has wreaked havoc across the impoverished Southeast Asian nation, damaging critical infrastructure amid ongoing civil conflict following a military coup in 2021 that ousted an elected government. The U.S. Geological Service's predictive modeling warns that the death toll could ultimately exceed 10,000, with economic losses projected to surpass the country’s annual output.
The military junta has formally requested international assistance, a notable move in light of the circumstances. "Search and rescue operations are currently being carried out in the affected areas," the junta stated on Saturday via state media.
International rescue teams have started to arrive, with nations such as Russia, India, Malaysia, and Singapore sending planes filled with relief supplies and personnel. Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar remarked, "We will continue to monitor the developments and more aid will follow."
South Korea has committed an initial $2 million in humanitarian aid to be distributed through international organizations. Despite its contentious relationship with the Myanmar military—evidenced by sanctions imposed on key officials including junta leader Min Aung Hlaing—the United States has also pledged assistance in response to the disaster.
The earthquake's impact has been felt widely, from the central plains surrounding Mandalay to the hilly regions of Shan State, where control remains fragmented. In Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city, residents and rescue workers urgently worked to free individuals trapped beneath collapsed structures, grappling with a shortage of heavy machinery necessary for debris removal.
As rescue operations continue, the need for efficient aid delivery and the provision of necessary resources remains critical in the wake of this tragic disaster.
