A powerful earthquake registering 7.7 on the Richter scale rocked Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread tremors that were felt as far as neighboring Thailand and regions in China. The natural disaster has already claimed the lives of three individuals in Myanmar, where the collapse of a mosque highlighted the catastrophe's deadly impact.
In Thailand, the tremors triggered significant structural damage, prompting the declaration of an “emergency zone” in the capital, Bangkok. Rescue operations are currently underway to locate and assist dozens of people believed to be trapped beneath the rubble of a high-rise construction site, where initial reports confirmed at least one fatality.
Just minutes after the initial quake, Myanmar experienced a powerful aftershock measuring 6.4, according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Myanmar, known as one of Asia's most impoverished nations, has been grappling with the complexities of a civil war ignited by a military coup in 2021. The existing infrastructural vulnerabilities render the nation ill-prepared for responding to significant natural disasters. The turmoil has fragmented control across various regions, leading to difficulties in gathering reliable information. Moreover, the military frequently disrupts communications in conflict zones, further complicating the situation.
Shengji Wei, a principal investigator at the Earth Observatory of Singapore, noted that this earthquake was anticipated. “The earthquake occurred along a segment of the Sagaing Fault, a major geological fault line known for significant seismic activity,” Wei explained. He has devoted a decade to investigating seismic hazards in Myanmar and had previously communicated the potential risks associated with this fault line to both the Myanmar government and local scientists.
“This segment has been relatively quiet for approximately 200 years. Nevertheless, historical studies and contemporary geophysical assessments indicated that it was likely to rupture in the near future," Wei stated, emphasizing that the earthquake was not unexpected from a scientific perspective.
Meanwhile, rescue teams in Thailand are working diligently to assess the situation at the collapsed construction site in Bangkok’s Chatuchak Park. Preliminary reports from the National Institute of Emergency Medicine (NIEM) indicated that around 320 individuals were present at the construction site when the earthquake struck. Rescue efforts are particularly focused on locating 20 workers trapped in an elevator on-site.
As of the latest updates from NIEM, the total number of casualties remains uncertain; however, preliminary reports mention at least one confirmed death, with approximately 50 injuries, 40 of whom have been transported to local hospitals for treatment.
As the situation develops, officials are calling for heightened vigilance and preparedness in the face of potential aftershocks and further structural instability in affected regions.
